Rock Rose, Brazilian Scientific Name:Pavonia hastata
History/general species info: As its name implies, rock rose will do just fine in rocky soils, making it a great choice for xeriscaped areas of the garden with decomposed granite or other gravelly substrate.
Characteristics: Small perennial shrub . Tough. Drought tolerant. Deer resistant. Long bloom period. 2" hibiscus-like flowers open in the morning and close in the afternoon heat. Self sows or can be propagated by softwood cuttings.
Flower: white with pink center
Planting / Care: Full sun. Average moist to dry (once established), well-drained soils. Does excellent under average garden conditions. Prune as needed to restore its shape and promote new growth. You can do a harder prune in late winter. Does excellent under average garden conditions. Drought tolerant plants will need to be well-established, usually 2-3 years at a minimum, before they are able to withstand our lengthy periods (weeks or months) without supplemental water.
