Scientific Name: Russelia equisetiformis

History/general species info: Also known as foutainbush, and coral fountain. Native to Mexico and Guatemala. The name was given to the genus by Baron Nikolaus von Jacquin to honour the naturalist Alexander Russell. The species name, equisetiformis means "like Equisetum" in reference to the resemblance the species has to a horsetail. 

Characteristics: Evergreen. Medium-sized shrub. Fast growing in sand, loam and clay. Deer resistant. Salt and wind tolerant. No serious disease or insect problems. White to yellow tubular flowers resemble small firecrackers that provide consistent color from spring through fall. Stems start out erect, and as they grow, fall over into long beautiful cascades. Great for training on a trellis, accenting a border, or spilling out of a container.

Planting / Care: Grows well in average, medium, well-drained sand, clay, loam soils. Requires full sun for best flowering and fullest growth. Plants tolerate extended drought once established.
