History/general species info: Native to Mexico and Central America that has been introduced in tropical and sub-tropical warm regions as an ornamental plant.
Characteristics: Evergreen. Medium shrub. Robust. This drought-tough shrub needs very little water to be happy once established. It’s ideal to screen a view. Work well in cut flower arrangements. Border; mass planting; container or above ground planter. Produces a dense attractive rounded canopy of bluish green foliage topped by showy spire–like flowers.

Planting / Care: Salt tolerant. Any soil type, but does prefer good drainage. Do not overwater. Do water to establish. No need to fertilize if in decent soil. Pests aren’t a problem. If it gets out of bounds, simply prune back and shape. Full sun is needed for best appearance and flowering, but can tolerate some shade. Flowering will be sparse without a full day of sun. Plant three to five feet apart in shrub border or in any mass planting. Plants are killed to the ground at about 25-degrees F. but quickly regrow in the spring.
