Mexican Honeysuckle
Scientific Name:  Justicia spicigera

History/general species info: Well known in Mexico and nearly throughout Central America.  The leaves are placed in hot water, which at first turns a dingy blackish color but later becomes dark blue.  This solution is employed by laundresses for whitening clothes, in the same manner as indigo.  

Characteristics:  Small shrub. Evergreen. Fast growing. Hardy to 15 degrees. Deer resistant. Easily identified by its bright orange, narrowly tubular flowers. One of the few adapted plants that works well in shady locations. It can be planted on north exposures, under trees, or other shady spots. Its lush foliage makes it an ideal addition.
