Scientific Name: Persea americana

History/general species info:  The Mexicola avocado originated in Pasadena, California around 1910, and the Mexicola Grande was propagated in Pasadena in 1912.

Characteristics: Fast growing, cold tolerant to 18 degrees. Fruit is glossy, near black, thin, easy to peel. Delicate flavor that is rich, nutty and smooth. The fruit ripens from August to October.  Bigger avocado than average (weighing 6 to 10 ounces), it has a rounder shape with paper thin skin, which is a darker black/purple color.  For more information click here.
